Vanessa Stewart: Nordic Blue

The background for this work was all done during a gig at Dean Clough, Halifax (sadly, I cannot recall the Scandinavian band name). The detail was overworked, taking motifs from other gigs that fitted the mood and spatial arrangement.

About the Artist

Vanessa’s practice is rooted in drawing exploring formal elements of line, colour and texture applying different media and scales. Her visual language is expressive and organic and outcomes are often digitally reinterpreted. The resulting compositions are richly layered, deliberately ambiguous and resonant of natural processes. Generally her aim is to create joyful imagery celebrating our curious world prompting viewers to wonder and speculation.

Vanessa has an ongoing project of mark making during live jazz gigs, where rhythm and timbre of the rich tonal landscape are captured in gestural auto-responses. These archives are reworked into compositions – an aspiration is to have some reinterpreted as graphic scores.

Vanessa’s background is as an educator; she works mainly as a community artist in West Yorkshire although is increasingly studio based. Currently she is one of the artists in residence at Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield, enjoying the challenge of responding to its programmes.
